ABOUT US
The principal purpose of Hispanics for Los Angeles Opera is to promote the appreciation of, and attendance at, opera performances of Los Angeles Opera by the Hispanic community of Los Angeles through support of education and community programs of Los Angeles Opera and through its own cultural and social activities.
Short History
We were organized in November, 1991, at the request of the then General Director of LA Opera, Peter Hemmings, and with the enthusiastic support of Placido Domingo, then Artistic Director, to promote the appreciation of, and attendance at, opera performances of LA Opera by the Hispanic community of Los Angeles by providing information about LA Opera and as well as opera and social events (see Calendar and Invitations) throughout each year for interested Hispanics to learn more about the world of LA Opera and to meet and socialize with each other. We also have provide support for the Educational and Community Program of LA Opera which provides opera performances and programs for the largely Hispanic school children of Los Angeles and have helped LA Opera to raise approximately $960,000. The annual Placido Domingo Award for Artistic Achievement, the only award bearing his name, is presented each year during our annual Placido Domingo Awards Dinner. The Hispanic audience at LA Opera has grown from 1% in 1991when we started to 8% in 2010. We have 2,249 Associate Members and 125 Contributing Members and Donors (see Membership page). We mail our Newsletter to all our members as well as to the General Counsels of Latin American countries and Spain, to 75 Spanish language media and to the LA City Council.” |
